Grand Theft Auto was controversial when it came out. As you play a criminal trying to get to the top, it involves a lot of dubious activities - car-jacking, cop killing, hit and runs, robbing banks, etc. It is amusing to play, but lack of an in-game save means you must complete each city before you can save. This can take a long time, and be frustrating if you don't quite make it before being gunned down or busted.
The sounds are great, bloody bone-crunching noises as you hit innocent pedestrians, and you can tune in your car radio to local stations, so many little touches make this game good. But the 2D view is of very poor quality, even if it does allow you to manoeuvre well and see what's happening around you.
A good game that has some irritating flaws, there is fun of doing wrong, and sickening you girlfriend as you call out "yes! I got the record for hit and runs!" and describing how you managed to wipe out an entire group of Hari-Krisnas. Just classic.
