Duke Nukem: Time to Kill

Who is Duke Nukem?  Think Arnie Swazenagger in Commando and your getting close.   He is big tough and has more one-liners than all three Die Hard movies together.   This outing has Duke relaxing in a bar when some Lard-cops bust in and start shooting.  He knows something is up when his Harley turns into a pink bicycle.   Setting out he finds a time machine with which the aliens are trying to eradicate him from ever being born.

The game is 3rd person, unlike the previous 1st person versions.  It has the gunplay of Doom, and the platforming and puzzles of Tomb Raider.  Similar to Duke Nukem 3D in atmosphere, it feels much smoother and merges these two styles quite nicely.   He packs a large number of weapons and accessories (hmmm, flame-throwers!) which all add to the fun.  As with Duke 3D, you can interact with your environment much more than Doom, using mirrors, toilets, shooting out lights, etc.

Graphically it is crisp, and ranges from cartoonish to dark  (lets not forget the seemingly compulsory dancing girls).  Sound is very good, weapons sound "realistic", that is they sound like what people think they should sound like.  I have never heard a rocket launcher or full auto-machine gun, but the shotguns, rifles and Ak-47's I have fired sound just like the relevant ones here.   The best bit is the numerous witticisms and one-liners Duke spits out, whether before, during or after combat he will often have a comment, and he loves picking up new weapons.

It really impresses initially, but is too short.  When finished you just want more.  The only annoyances are some slight occasional clipping, and the control setup.  This works fine, but I would prefer Quake 2's "Freelook", it is the best control system I have used yet for fully 3D games like this.  Buy it, play it!  Kick some ass!
