Result vs. Playstation standards :                  8 -  Quake for the Playstation!

Graphics:           9 - Neato textures, gloomy setting, grisly cyborgs.
FMV :                 7 - Long, but lacking hard stuff (faces, organics, etc).
Sound :              9 - Speech, guns, blood splattering gore.
Music :               7 - Dark, moody techno.
A.I. :                 6 - Ok, but can be confused.
Lifespan :          7 - Moderate singleplayer, lots of Deathmacthes.
Gameplay :        8 - Fragfest!
Adrenaline :      10 - 1st person perfection.

Result comparative to PC version :                  4 -  Deficient in almost every department.
(5 being equal)

Graphics:           4 - A software/GL hybrid.
FMV :                 6 - Different, but very similar style.
Sound :              5 - Digitised perfection.
Music :               4 - limited tracks.
A.I. :                 5 - Just the same.
Lifespan :          2 - Far, far shorter.
Gameplay :        4 - Inaccurate gamepad with limited button combinations.
Adrenaline :      6 - Harder, more brutal.

Quake, the word defines 1st person shooters.  Now on the PSX which means comparisons with it's older brother (and PC Quake 3 has just been released too).   This all means it is hard to block out the joys of the PC version, and concentrate purely on comparisons with other similar Playstation titles, so I might as well get PC biases out of the way to start with.  But as an old-time fragger, it's probably good that you know I might be somewhat skewed in my perceptions.

Compared to the PC version?  it is a little harder (more of the tougher monsters, more damage taken per hit), but suffers from the lack of memory of most other areas.   The programmers have done a great job getting so much in.  The graphics are almost as good, all the more memorable levels are there, and apart from the controllers, the gameplay feel very similar.  Still that's the thing, if you have played the PC version, this will always be lacking in comparison.

Compared to other Playstation 1st person shooters?  This must be one of the best.   The plot is pretty thin, the puzzles very simple, and the gameplay (to be brutal) repetitive.  But the frantic action can't be beat.  The eye-candy is everywhere, and the 3D world feels much more real than any other game; perspective is true, tight/open spaces, light and water effects.  If you want a fun blastfest this is the game, I just wish I could use my Gencon 45 with this as well...
