Day 12 - Chora, Naxos

May 24, 1997

Woke up at 8:10 this AM. House was empty. Sue had gone to the market with the other Greek mommas to get bread and fruit for breakfast. She came back with hot, fresh bread, orange, banana and cheese. Great meal on the patio.

Sue with Nick and Anna Started down to the museum at about 10:00 and got corralled by our Greek neighbours downstairs. We had to have "Greek Coffee" with them. Very nice, surprisingly to us both. Then much conversation and where to go and what to see.

  • Don't go to Ios. - "That is an island where men dance together".
  • Don't stay overnight on Mykonos. Too Expensive. But go on a day trip and come back to Naxos at night. We will. Tomorrow. Mykonos - 3 1/2 hours, Delos 2 hours. Leave here 9:30 AM and return 7:30 PM.
  • Go to Amorgos but don't stay in town. Go to Egialos and get a room.
  • Etc., etc., etc.
Finally broke loose at 11:00 and headed to town. Wandered around the market and Sue decided to go to Santa Anna beach for the afternoon. Short bus ride. I started home, bought a gyro (pronounced "hero", and ate it on the esplande.

Thought I was beaching at Agios Anna (pronounced Santa Anna). Turned out I got off the bus too early (my first on-my-own-without-my-Dad bus ride) and beached at Agios Prokopious instead. The beach was very pretty, but Santa Anna is the one to see I guess. Next time. This was also a topless beach. I guess they all are, really. Everybody just arrives, and bares it all. So, when in Greece - do as the Grecians - Today was the Day!!

Got back to the room and Dad wasn't here. Turned out he had met Nick and Anna on the beach and was waylaid. I had bought a bottle of beer on the way home, so had no bottle opener. I managed to pry it open on the gate latch. I'm a Survivor!

....just a sideline to talk about Greek crops. We have seen everything from olives, lemons, tomatoes, zucchini, walnuts, wheat, barley, hay, potatoes, avacados, beans, and bamboo. All growing on plots of red earth, or sand, about the size of our front yard. The price of one lot at the end of our block, currently growing tomatoes is 25,000,000 drachmas. (Approx $125,000).

Went down to town to phone home. Talked to Mom first, then phoned Greg (Jeff was at Sean's, Christy still sleeping) It was 5:45 PM here and 8:45 AM there). Cost of my phone call to Greg - 800 drachmas. Just over $4.00. Blew me away! I thought it would be VERY expensive. Sue again

Bought some bread, and back to Vakhos Studios. They got an official name sign for the front of the building today, so now we're not staying in a nameless building anymore. Vakhos is from Bacchus, the Greek god of wine.
