Day 17 - Akrotiri/Kamares, SantoriniThursday, May 29, 1997Eva has this wonderful yogurt and honeyed grapes for us for breakfast. It looks like an ice cream sundae and tastes even better. Dad asked for "small" and it came with maybe 1 tablespoon less than usual.Dad rented a motorcycle and off we went beach hunting. Checked out Red Beach (which is actually a black sand beach but is named after the red lava cliffs behind). Then on to Perivolos and Sallada and Perissa. Dad dropped me off and went exploring. He ended up trading motorcycles for one that shifted better. He went into Thira to get our roll of film developed so we could see how the camera is behaving. I lost approximately 1/3 of my shots, so am going to have to be extra careful that the lens opens. I still have some great pictures, and for the rest?....well, I've got them in my memory bank. Then Dad went to Kamares (where he found a place with the internet) and Monolithos. After he picked me up he went up to this old castle on top of the hill. Couldn't get in, but continued up to the end of the road. There, right at the end was a little mini-mart. A guy sitting out front motioned him in for some home-made retsina from a barrel. Dad tested a glass from each of the two barrels, and then bought some nuts from his store. He was gone over two hours, and I was beginning to wonder if he'd driven into a ditch or something. All these things go through your mind, and I had already decided I would ask Karlos to help me look for him, when I heard his motorcycle in the driveway. He didn't even realize he was overdue. For supper tonight we went to a Traditional Cave Tavern owned by Eva's father. We chose to sit inside the cave tonight, and had mousaka and Greek Salad. The cave is right on the waterfront at Akrotiri Beach. The tavern itself is just kind of like a long tunnel with benches along one side. Our table was close to the retsina barrels and we had a great view of the ladies cooking in the kitchen.
