Day 8 - Galissas, Syros

May 20, 1997

Hopped the 10:00 AM bus for Galissas! Dad rented a motorcycle to tour the island, and I set off for the beach. So where's the nude beach I've heard about? Up and over the top. Started climbing up this rocky, brambly path, not knowing if in fact that was where I was headed. (There's a church up there too). Then saw this old rickety gate - closed. Do I go through? OK. Then over this goat path (there was actually a shepherd with a flock of sheep) and started down. WHOA! 3 bare-ass naked Greeks!! Two on the beach, one out wading..... Very brown.... All over. About face, and back up the rocky path.

syros beach Layed on the regular beach, (hardly a soul here), and met a very nice lady from England - Mary. She's here on a painting holiday - staying at Possidonia. She was going to sketch me, but wantd to sunbathe for a while first. Never did get the sketches done. Too bad, she was quite talented, and it would have been cool.

I sat in the surf for quite some time, just letting the blue, blue Aegean lap at my feet. Starting to relax.....

Sinc's Entry

Rented a bike, w/helmet, too small, and took off to see the island. Rode for a couple of hours over cobblestones until my whole body was shook up. Toured the whole island and got back to Gallissa just in time to meet Sue and catch the 3:00 bus back to Ermoupolis. We stopped into a shop on the way to "Paradise" and bought olives and water to complement our Happy Hour. The store had a van parked so close to the door that we had to squeeze sideways to get in.

When we got to our room Sue wanted to take a shower. There were no towels so I had to "break" into a linen closet and confiscate some. Had a nice snack time with olives, cheese, bread, yogurt w/cukes, vodka and all. Just relaxing now at 8:00 PM waiting for supper

9:20

dinner We're still awake. We've never made it till the dinner hour. Whenever we've tried to have supper, it's always too early. Walked along the dock - very noisy, big partee, almost carnivale. Decided to dine at the Square. Ouzo, retsina, pasta for Dad and a variety plate for me. Had fun watching the cab drivers move their cabs along the Square to get in line. The first one I saw this morning, I thought he was out of gas. They get out and push their cabs instead of wasting fuel. At 2.22 drachmas/litre I can understand. That's about $1.10/litre.
