Journal - Day 9

Day 9 - Chora, Naxos

Wednesday, May 21, 1997

Another beautiful Syros morning...getting used to it. We had breakfast at a dockside cafe after we got our ferry ticket for Paros. While we sat there looking at "The Lonely Planet" Dad changed his mind and said "How about Naxos instead?" (This is what is just so cool - we just decide on the spur of the moment "literally" where we will go next. I LOVE it! We head down to the ferry office. If the boat goes to Naxos on Wednesday, and it IS Wednesday - that's where we end up). Sue standing beside ferry schedule

So we traded in our Paros ticket and headed for Naxos on the Supercat! A big fast catamaran luxury ferry. Ate our picnic lunch while seated at this huge lushly upholstered round lounge area. Bread, pear & cheese. Then I went up top to join a few backpackers in the sun. Turned out we needn't have paid the extra to go to Naxos. They just checked your ticket as you board.

We were met at the dock by a flock of hotel hawkers. Dad was looking for Dmitri, (whom he had stayed with before), but he wasn't there, so we went with another guy. He drove us in this old dilapidated old car. The room is brand new, very close to St. George's Beach, but quite small - 5,000 drachmas ($25.00)

We decided to see if we could find Dimitris Hotel. It was called Vakhos. Dad thought he could find it. Well, we found him. He was sleeping, but when he saw Dad he said "Yes, from Canada". He remembered Dad, and they reminisced for a little while. His rooms are about the same, but 4,000 drachmas ($20). On the way over, we had seen a Beautiful place. The Poseidon. 6,000 drachmas ($30) so think we will move there tomorrow. I bought a sketch pad in Syros, and have been doing some sketching. The Poseidon looks like it's got lots of good artsy areas.

Well, we were just getting settled in, when Madame (Dmitri's wife) spots Dad on the street. They have a new studio - would we like to see it? Brand new, marble floors, private bath/shower, kitchen, little table/living area. 4,000 drachmas. We'll TAKE it! Turns out of course that it's a special deal for Dad. Regular price 7,500 dr. We can move in at 8:00 AM tomorrow. We were tempted to skip out on the guy who's room we were in, but then decided to stay there for the night.

Went for a long evening stroll along St. George's Beach, then along this brand new stone boardwalk park area to the harbour. Got pulled into this cute cafe for lamb ('lamp' on the menu), souvlaki, Greek Salad, ouzo and beer. Walked back home in the dark.
