Day 28 - Appollon & Chora, Naxos

June 9, 1997

On the agenda for today - a motorcycle excursion up the West Coast Highway to Appollon. It was cool and very windy as we meandered up the mountain. Because of the wind, the seascapes were spectacular as the waves pounded against the rocks. Passed this beautiful castle structure (Agio). There was road construction at the end, but we got through! Brunch in Appollon.

One of the things we have seen a lot is vendors driving in trucks with their megaphones blaring out in the streets, selling anything from fruit to shoes. Today we saw a family selling areca palm trees. They would jump out of their van and Mama and both kids would run up to restaurants with two huge palm plants in their arms and place them outside the entrance to the restaurant. Don't think they made any sales, though.

We had planned on continuing past Chora (the town we're staying in and going to Makri Vigla, but after 4 hours on the back of the scooter, I decided to pass. Dad was pretty beat up too, from riding the motorcycle into the wind.

Anna made us some Greek coffee (her specialty) and then I decided to walk to the end of the boardwalk to watch the windsurfers. They go SO fast! I sat on the beach for a while (temperature is hot, but the wind keeps it moderate). I had enough sand blown into my face, hair, body, to form a small sand dune by the time I got back. I had walked along the beach, right in the edge of the surf, sandals in hand, watching my footsteps disappear with each crashing wave. I felt like the girl from Ipanema.

No dinner out tonight. Leftovers instead. Vine leaves, feta cheese, olives and bread. A short walk to the harbour - bought 2 conches for the kids from an old Greek fisherman. Home early.

Chora, Naxos
