Day 20 - Analipsi, CreteSunday, June 1, 1997Had a great sleep in our new home. Decided to breakfast in, and then check out Makri Gialos. Talked with a few shopkeepers, Christopher in particular. Yesterday, as we had trudged past his shop, each sweating and carrying 3 dufflebags each, his son Michael had asked us if we were looking for a place to stay. So today, Dad ended up buying a snorkel and mask from him, and we showed them both our pictures of family, homes, and scenery from Edmonton and the Rocky Mountains. They were quite impressed.Checked out our beach. Endless sand and surf. Dad came down to check out the water temperature (warm enough for him to buy a "snork", as Michael called it). Later we both went to the pool and read for a while. 6:00 PM was my big Greek lesson! Kal-ee-mara = Good Morning, E-fair-ees-to=Thank you, and on and on. We decided to walk up the hill for supper tonight and ate at a restaurant called "Zeus". I had stuffed aubergine (eggplant), and Dad had Stifado (stew). The key to our palatial villa is something else! It's a big hunkey thing. When we first arrived the lights didn't work. We were flicking switches on and off. Turns out you put this big hunky thing - a magnet as it turns out, into the recepticle, and.....magic - all the lights come on! Just a couple of country bumpkins from Canada, eh? Another incongruity to us: How can a place have all these modern electronic gadgets (also cell phones everywhere), but you can't flush toilet paper down the toilets? So far we haven't had 2 toilets that flush the same way yet. Always an experience finding the flusher-thingy.
