Day 22 - Sitia, Crete (or Kriti as they call it here)

Tuesday, June 3, 1997

Hopped the bus to Sitia. A long switchback of a road where we would have had 2 bridges and a freeway built through. I was sitting right over the rear wheels, and the sound and smell of brakes burning was overpowering ( and scary). When we got off the bus, there was smoke coming off them!

Met a lady from England on the bus who sounded joost laik Shirley Valentine.

We checked out boat tickets leaving Crete on Saturday. Would you believe there is not ONE ferry leaving Crete on Saturday? We can go to Naxos on Friday or Milos on Sunday. If we wait until Sunday we have to find another place to stay, as our last night is Friday night. What shall we do? I'd really like to see Milos, but there's a lot to be said for going back to Naxos. We Really liked it there. Its close to the beach, close to downtown, $20 Cdn a night, and comfortable. Think that's what we will do. It's my decision Dad says, and I'm leaning toward Milos. Why go back somewhere we've already been. We should see another island. We'll think about it some more.

Market day in Sitia...once we found it! It was about 12 blocks - straight up. Dad bought cheese. Hard, strong, old. Back to home on the 12:15. Sue pooled it and I went for a walk and had a greek coffee with Christopher. Then supper back at Christopher's restaurant. Very good. Complementary Ouzo and Metaxa after the meal.
