Tricks of the Trade

To survive abuse
A child learns a skill,
To protect themselves,
From a life of pain.

A coat of armor,
To ward off the blows,
A helmet hard,
To deflect angry words.

Ability to shrink,
So small to hide,
Invisibility cape,
So not to be seen.

The last thing a child
of abuse really needs,
Is a tiny strongbox
To hide a soul.
