Kamakura

After going to the International Art Exhibition 1999 at Keio University we visited nearby Kamakura. This is a place of many temples and shrines and shops and include the great Buddha statue.

This is the Daibuhtsu (Big Buddha). Now days they charge 200 yen to get in here. The place is full of foreigners.

Here is a close-up view of Daibuhtsu.

The six Jizos (roku jizo). Hasedera Temple

At the Hasedera Temple there was also a shrine to unborn babies. The smallest of the baby jizos is 20,000 yen. Shown here are two larger ones.

Shown here are some of the small and medium sized jizos. Each parent who lost a child before birth has their own baby jizo. They also bring it toys and clothing sometimes.

This Jizo is holding a Shakujo (the pole with rings).
