Fifteenth day in Japan

Mt. Takao

Today Michie took us to Mt. Takao. It is at the end of the Keio train line which passes near our home. Mt. Takao is about 2000 feet high and is the nearest mountain to Tokyo. From the top we can see the entire city of Tokyo in one direction and Mt. Fuji in another direction. There are nice hiking trails there; we explored several.
The first thing we noticed was that there were a lot of small children there.

On the tram that took us up the first half of the mountain there were many small children. This group all wore yellow caps.

When we reached the top of the mountain we all ate lunch. It was a noisy and lively place.

This little girl reminded Yoshiko of herself when she was small. Same hair style. She is eating a rice ball - same as us.

This boy was wearing short pants. He kept his legs warm at lunch by putting them in his shirt. This seemed to be a common practice with several of the children there.

Each child brought their own small mat to sit upon and their own bento (lunch) box from home.

This boy is using chopsticks (hashi) to eat his bento lunch.
