Remember to hit reload every day or else the new card may not load!
Not all of the old Card of the Day files are working right now. All of the old files should be running within one month. About 70-85% are working now. Sorry for the delays getting new cards done too. Things are getting back to normal rather well.
In this web page, I hope to present to you strategies, combos, and obscure uses for a new
Magic: The Gathering card every single day.
The Card of the Day is...
Dire Wolves
Ice Age Common
3G Summon Wolves
2/2
"Gains banding if you control any plains."
A brief rundown of the card:
Dire Wolves don't see too much action. 2/2 with conditional banding for 3G isn't too hot, but the fact it's a green creature that can have banding does set it apart from almost every green creature around (except Timber Wolves and Master of the Hunt tokens kinda). Why is a green banding creature important? Green has the best creatures for the price for sure. Banding is an awesome ability in combat--especially when a few heavy creatures are involved. A simple duo of Dire Wolves and Durkwood Boars banded can knock out a creature up to 4/6 size, and live to fight again. Opponents usually aren't ready to make banding calculations when facing a green deck also---they're usually used to thinking about banding only when white is in play. Try Dire Wolves once or twice. You might find they aren't too bad of a card to tote around. Here are some of my favorite cards to band Dire Wolves with:
- Wall of Brambles/Wall of Pine Needles
Banding anything with a regenerating wall call be extremely effective defense. Simply divert all damage dealt to the banding mess to the wall, and enjoy dealing 4-5 damage to whatever poor creature you're blocking. These two walls are extra handy with Dire Wolves because they're green, and they can dish out a fair amount of damage by themselves.
- Wall of Ice
If your opponent likes using such heavies as Craw Giant and Force of Nature, maybe throw in some mighty Wall of Ices in your deck to compliment to Dire Wolves' banding. Not many creatures can bring down these 2 banded together.
- Thicket Basilisk/Cockatrice/Venom
All of these petrify effects will make an opponent hesitate to block any attack. If you band Dire Wolves with a petrifying creature, your opponent will hesistate to let them hit. I wouldn't want to be in that situation..."Do I take 4, or loose the Serra Angel...???"
- Celestial Dawn/Phantasmal Terrain/Magical Hack...
Maybe try sneaking one of these ways to switch land types out several turns after you play Dire Wolves. Hopefully your opponent will forget about that banding clause after its too late. A last minute banding change should be able to win you one creature combat for sure (at least killing one extra opponent's creature).
