Yes indeed, Volcanic Island was way too powerfull. If you're looking into a building a blue/red deck and either wish the deck to be type 2 legal or don't own any/wish to supplement Volcanic Islands, Caldera Lake is a fine choice. The ability to produce multiple colors of mana from a single card is rather valuable, especially when that mana source is a land (they can't be countered like everything else.) Here are some ideas for a blue/red deck that all benefit greatly with some help from a Caldera Lake or two:
