BLACK BLUE GREEN RED WHITE ARTIFACT GOLD LAND

In this web page, I hope to present to you strategies, combos, and obscure uses for a new Magic: The Gathering card every single day.

The Card of the Day is...

Elephant Grass

Visions Uncommon
G Enchantment

"Cumulative upkeep 1
Black creatures cannot attack you. Nonblack creatures cannot attack you unless their controller pays an additional 2 for each attacking creature."

Green has been blessed with some of the nastiest creatures around, along with some of the nastiest ways of keeping creatures from doing much harm to you. Along with Fog, Undergrowth, and Spore Cloud is Elephant Grass in the upper echelon of creature stoppers. Try and forget about that cumulative upkeep thing for a little while and think more about the rest of the card. Propaganda and Mudsilde may have similar effects, yet Elephant Grass is cheaper to cast and it is one of the best ways to shut down a black creature-based deck. Even the famed Vampire Bats/Will O' the Wisp/Black Knight/Bad Moon decks can get around Propaganda and Mudslide with a little work. Pendrell Mists and Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale aren't perfect at stopping creatures, just darn good at it. Elephant Grass isn't for any deck like the Tabernacle though. It should perhaps stay in a sideboard for protection against strong creature decks (particularly black weenie decks....they'll be crushed in most cases), or perhaps try using Elephant Grass as an alternative to Wrath of God for mass-creature defense. You'll have to help Elephant Grass along a little, but the rewards are worth it. Here are some ideas to use with Elephant Grass:
