BLACK BLUE GREEN RED WHITE ARTIFACT GOLD LAND

In this web page, I hope to present to you strategies, combos, and obscure uses for a new Magic: The Gathering card every single day.

The Card of the Day is...

Soldevi Steam Beast

Alliances Common
5 Artifact Creature

4/2
"Whenever Soldevi Steam Beast becomes tapped, target opponent gains 2 life.
2: Regenerate"

As a general rule of thumb, artifacts that are commons are of...ummm...obscure use?!? Artifact creatures that are commons are even more so...whatever I said above. I'm not totally putting down Soldevi Steam Beast, it's just a little odd. I'd almost put Soldevi Steam Beast in the same category as Keeper of Tresserhorn. They are both quite hard to kill for their casting cost--the keeper is 6/6 and the beast has regeneration, yet they don't make themselves able to deal that much damage to your opponent. Some damage? Sure, yet it's very little in comparison to their casting cost. Kinda an odd situation. Even though the keeper is 6/6, he only lowers your opponent's life by 2 if unblocked, whereas the Soldevi Steam Beast can deal 4 damage yet gives your opponent 2 life if ever tapped. Another small shortcoming of the beast is when it regenerates, it becomes tapped, hence giving your opponent two life. This sucks after a few turns of having to regenerate your Soldevi Steam Beast to stay alive while being pelting every turn by a swarm of Tims. Not that this has ever happened to me though..cough cough. What if they get an Icy out? Arghhh! It's a cheap Fountain of Youth for them all of a sudden. In light of all of this, the Soldevi Steam Beast can be a reasonably effective defender. Perhaps try it in a deck where you don't care how much life your opponent gets (Poison counters, Millstone...)??? Here are some ideas on alternative uses for one of the more alternative creatures ever made:
