BLACK BLUE GREEN RED WHITE ARTIFACT GOLD LAND

In this web page, I hope to present to you strategies, combos, and obscure uses for a new Magic: The Gathering card every single day.

The Card of the Day is...

Igneous Golem

Mirage Uncommon
5 Artifact Creature

3/4
"2: Trample until end of turn."

A good deal of artifact creatures that were printed in earlier sets were just too darn powerfull. I'd almost always rather have a Clockwork Avian or Juggernaut than an Igneous Golem, yet in type II play I am limited to the choice of artifact creatures. Igneous Golem isn't too bad of a "filler" creature in a not-to-serious deck. It's not great, it's not bad. Having a toughness of 4 is a very handy selling point---always able to survive one of most of the popular red means of killing creatures (Lightning Bolt and Incinerate), and Igneous Golem is immune to Terror. Having to pay a little mana to give it trample is a fairly nifty ability. Let's compare Igneous Golem to a card I feel is reasonably balanced--Durkwood Boars. Igneous Golem is technically cheaper to cast, yet only has a power of three compared to the pig's four. The pumpable trample ability just about compensates for the smaller power---making Igneous Golem a so-so choice. Give it a whirl for variety sometime. It is always good to see new faces in games these days. Here are some combos that seem to work alright on a medium sized trampling artifact creature:
